What to expect when you go to have your eyes screened.
This is painless, almost every student in every Intermediate and High School in Rotorua is getting this done.
Essentially we just take an image – like a photo – of the front of your eye
Keratoconus Screening Journey at School
- Your class will be booked for a screening of the surface of the eyes at your school. On the day, you will be guided over the screening area by teachers/helpers or volunteers from your respective classrooms.
- All students will be asked to line up in a single line and head up to the machine, one at a time.
- Contact lenses can be taken off prior to coming to the screening area or can be taken off while you wait for your turn, so please remember to bring your cases, lens solutions etc.
- You will be asked to approach the machine and the person scanning, one at a time
- Once you are there, you will be asked your name and confirm your date of birth.
- Once you sit down at the machine, you will be asked to take off your glasses and place them on the table.
- You will then be asked to place your chin on the chin rest and press your forehead against the top bar on the scanner.
- Slight adjustments to the table or chin rest will be made, if need be.
- When you look inside the machine, you will see an orange flower that you will need to always concentrate on.

- The person scanning will ask you to open your eyes wide and stop blinking and they will go ahead and scan when the time is right.
- The scan itself will take about 2 seconds to do, which is easy, fast and painless.
- After scanning, it takes about 5 seconds to process the scan
- If the person scanning is not happy with the quality of the scan, you will be asked to repeat it one more time.
- If they are happy with the quality you get to carry on with your day.
- It is all very quick and effortless.
- Results of the scan will be sent to your parents.
- There is no wrong or right, pass or fail, we celebrate the fact that we are all unique individuals.
